Michael Moorcock author interview: pie-eyed pooches and psychic sofas (video).

March 2024 is sparking up with mayhem and marvel as ace fantasy author Michael Moorcock beams back onto Forbidden Planet TV. This time, he’s gabbing away with the ever-curious Andrew Sumner about the scintillating second installment of Titan Comics’ grand tribute to Moorcock’s cosmic comic saga, MOORCOCK’S MULTIVERSE, featuring mind-boggling artistry from the legendary Walter Simonson. But hold your space horses! They’re also lifting the curtain on another titanic Titan project: ELRIC – THE MAKING OF A SORCERER.

Moorcock and Sumner, those two notorious chatterboxes, veer off into a kaleidoscope of kooky topics: the ominous shadows of advanced capitalism, the enchanting yet utterly confusing town of Wigan (and its infamous pies that even dogs like Alfie Evans drool over), the literary juggernaut J.G. Ballard, and the muscle-busting Three Peaks Challenge. Marvel at the revelations about Walter Simonson’s artistic wizardry, engage in the curious case of Moorcock’s missing voucher copies, and take a seat on the imaginary dream couches in Moorcock & Sumner’s patented Hyperbolic Chambers™. Witness Moorcock’s vocal cords defy time, crooning alongside legends like Tony Bennett, Johnny Cash, and Joan Baez, while delving into the nostalgic echoes of Blossom Dearie’s final show.

They don’t shy away from the whimsy, either—discussing Moorcock’s intertwined destiny with Hawkwind & The Deep Fix, saluting his hammer-wielding mother’s foresight, and even dropping names like Italian starlet Silvano Manga and the robust brews of Taylor Walker.

Prepare for literary detours through Moorcock’s soon-to-be-released novel The Wounds of Albion, his kinship with titans of sci-fi like Arthur C. Clarke, Philip José Farmer, and Leigh Brackett, and indulging in genre classics from Jack Vance and Poul Anderson. They even dip their toes into the bubbly waters of old-time Republicans, nod to The Scaffold’s “Lily the Pink,” and admire the word-craft of Roger McGough.

Oh, and there’s a bit about Pete Brown’s Battered Ornaments, Mal Dean’s astonishing band, Liverpool’s dual love affair with sci-fi and tunes, boxing nights at the Liverpool Stadium, and a peculiar brush with Apple Corps Ltd (and George Harrison’s tempting chequebook!).
