Three-Body: Chinese scifi TV series, based on the Three-Body Problem (all 30 episodes in full: video).

TenCent, often considered the Chinese version of Amazon, make TV shows as well, and they have just put their entire 30-episode TV series Three-Body up on YouTube to watch for free. This is based on the science fiction novel the Three-Body Problem. There is also a Netflix version of the same book coming some time in the future, but until then, here is the English subtitles version of the original to keep you entertained. In a world where science fiction is king, it seems that China is stepping up to the plate with their latest offering. The highly anticipated series Three-Body has finally hit the screens, and it’s proving to be a hit with Sino-audiences.

The show, based on The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin, tells the story of a nanomaterials expert, Wang Miao, who is called upon to investigate a string of strange suicides in the scientific community. Along the way, he uncovers a mysterious organization called the Frontiers of Science and learns about the connection between an alien world depicted in a popular video game and the fate of humanity.

The series boasts an impressive cast, including Zhang Luyi as Wang Miao, Yu Hewei as Shi Qiang, and Chen Jin and Wang Ziwen as Ye Wenjie. The production of Three-Body was not without its challenges, however. Tencent had secured the rights to the novels in 2008, but it wasn’t until 2015 that YooZoo Film attempted to produce a live-action adaptation. Filming for this adaptation lasted for five months but was ultimately never released.

Undeterred, Tencent continued to work on their own adaptation, and after four years of scriptwriting, shooting began in July 2020 and lasted for 126 days. The Beijing Electron-Positron Collider II even doubled for the particle accelerator in the series.

Fans of science fiction and Chinese television alike are rejoicing at the release of Three-Body, and it seems that the show has already established itself as a hit. So, if you’re looking for a thrilling sci-fi ride with a touch of mystery and intrigue, Three-Body is definitely worth checking out.

  • Thanks for the recommendation. I’m on episode 7 and I’d say it’s the bets TV adaptation of a novel I’ve ever watched.
