LightSail 2 goes a-solar-sailing (space news).

The Planetary Society’s LightSail 2 spacecraft has now gone solar sailing.

After a successful launch on June 25th 2019 from the Kennedy Space Center aboard SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy, LightSail 2 was efficiently unpacked and unfurled for its full sail deployment attempt on Tuesday July 23rd 2019.

The LightSail 2 is a crowdfunded spacecraft mission by the Planetary Society to demonstrate the potential of solar sailing around the Earth.

Planetary Society head cheese Bill Nye told SFcrowsnest, “We are advancing space science and exploration. We are democratising space. We are innovating.”
