Fallout: new Amazon TV scifi series (trailer).

Brace yourselves, sci-fi aficionados, for Fallout is coming to Amazon Prime Video! This isn’t just any post-apocalyptic drama; it’s the brainchild of Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, who apparently thought, “Hey, let’s take a video game and see if we can make it even more bizarre on screen!” Yes, Fallout, based on the cult-favorite RPG franchise, is about to become your new reason to ignore real-world responsibilities.

Developed by Joy and Nolan’s Kilter Films for Amazon Prime Video, Fallout promises to be as eccentric as its video game counterpart. Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks, who probably couldn’t resist the opportunity to see their game turned into live-action madness, are also on board.

The series is set to premiere on April 12, 2024, so mark your calendars or don’t — it’s your apocalyptic future after all. The premise? Imagine a world where people live in luxury fallout shelters because the outside world is a little too glow-in-the-dark thanks to a nuclear war. Now imagine those sheltered souls emerging 200 years later into a world that’s a mix of retro 1950s and a radioactive wasteland — what could possibly go wrong?

Starring the likes of Walton Goggins as The Ghoul (or Cooper Howard, depending on his mood), Ella Purnell as Lucy, and Kyle MacLachlan as Hank, Fallout is essentially a ‘who’s who’ of characters you’d probably never invite to dinner. The show also features Aaron Moten as Maximus, because every dystopia needs a guy named Maximus, and a whole host of other characters who are probably just as bewildered by their existence as we are.

Under the direction of Jonathan Nolan, who’ll be helming the first three episodes, the show is described by Joy as “a gonzo, crazy, funny, adventure, and mindfuck like none you’ve ever seen before.” We’re not sure if that’s a warning or an invitation, but we’re intrigued.

Filming kicked off on July 5th, 2022, across New Jersey, New York, and Utah, because nothing screams ‘post-apocalyptic landscape’ like New Jersey. The production also added Sarita Choudhury, Michael Emerson, Leslie Uggams, and Zach Cherry to its ensemble, further expanding its roster of characters likely to be dealing with varying degrees of radiation poisoning.

The big twist? This show is set within the same continuity as the game franchise. Todd Howard, known for directing various games in the series, didn’t want to adapt any existing games. Instead, he’s aiming for an original story, because who needs source material when you can just make it up as you go along? With Stuart Dryburgh and Teodoro Maniaci serving as cinematographers, expect Fallout to have all the visual appeal of a world where everything’s gone to hell in a handbasket — but in a stylish, retro way.

So, get ready for Fallout on April 12, 2024. It’s set to be a wild ride through a nuclear wasteland that’s part comedy, part drama, and entirely unhinged. Post-apocalyptic world, here we come — we just hope the Wi-Fi still works.
