Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (monster movie: trailer).
Get ready for yet another rumble in the jungle (and probably some cities too) with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Yes, you read that right. It seems Hollywood has run out of ideas again and decided, “Why not make Godzilla and Kong fight… again?” Directed by Adam Wingard, who must love giant creatures smashing things as much as we do, this film is the sequel nobody asked for but we’re getting anyway.
Produced by Legendary Pictures and set to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, this movie is essentially the seventh time we get to see big monsters go smashy-smashy in the MonsterVerse. It’s also the 38th film in the Godzilla franchise (because 37 just wasn’t enough) and the 13th film in the King Kong franchise. Fun fact: it’s the fifth Godzilla film completely produced by an American studio, so expect lots of explosions and probably a bald eagle somewhere.
The star-studded cast includes Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen. They’re either there to run away from the monsters, study the monsters, or possibly become accidental monster snacks. Who knows?
After Godzilla vs. Kong somehow made a splash during the pandemic, Legendary thought, “Hey, let’s make another one!” So, they announced a sequel in March 2022 and began filming later that year. Because nothing says “innovation” like repeating the same formula, right?
The plot? Oh, it’s something about Godzilla and Kong facing a new, big, bad, undiscovered threat. I mean, what could possibly be more threatening than Godzilla and Kong, you ask? Maybe it’s a giant monster accountant calculating the city damage bills. The film promises to dive into the histories of these Titans, exploring mysteries of Skull Island and beyond. We’re expecting a mix of monster brawls, pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo, and a few token humans looking bewildered.
Once again, Wingard is collaborating with his usual suspects, including director of photography Ben Seresin, because if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The screenplay is by Terry Rossio, who apparently wasn’t busy, and Simon Barrett and Jeremy Slater, who must love the sound of crumbling buildings.
As for the music, Tom Holkenborg is back with Antonio Di Iorio. They’re probably competing to see who can make the most eardrum-busting monster roar.
The film is set to release on April 12, 2024, assuming the world hasn’t ended by then. So, mark your calendars, or don’t. Either way, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is coming to a theater near you, ready to deliver more of the same old monster madness we’ve all seen a gazillion times. But hey, who doesn’t love a good monster mash?
