J. Michael Straczynski’s TV scifi creation, Babylon 5, carved out its own niche in popular culture by eschewing the shadow of their preeminent rival Star Trek and using innovative production methods and longform narrative, instead.

The closing of the show’s home network PTEN, however, gave the impression that it would end abruptly after its fourth season. That is, until TNT abruptly renewed the broadcast. The next period of the fledgling series would be one of the most problematic from a production standpoint and one of the most divisive among fans.
