VW Bus returns in 2022 … fully electric.

Volkswagen is launching its new VW shagg’n wagg’n – aka the I.D.Buzz – electric vehicle in 2022 in the USA, Europe and China. If you want to go surfing or drive your friends out for a picnic in the Californian sun, then no doubt this will be the hipster ride you are looking for. Probably quite good for conversion into a mobile touring tent-like affair, too.

Designed to flatter the original Volkswagen Type 2 Microbus design, the front V in the bodywork calls back to the two-tone predecessor of the original Bus, but the I.D. Buzz carries a light strip that surrounds the vehicle and gives it a visual signature. The LED headlights have hexagonal segments that act as “eyes” to communicate the vehicle’s status. There’s also a front trunk, like the original VW Beetle.

The first VW Bus sold in the United States in 1950 had all of 30 hp. The I.D. Buzz concept sports 369 hp from electric motors on each axle that also provide all wheel drive and the 111 kWh battery pack in the floor of the MEB chassis provide nearly 300 miles of estimated range. Using a VW fast-charge system, it will be able to recharge about 80 percent of its energy capacity in 30 minutes at 150 kW.

And of course, as this is fully electric, there’s no need for it to come with hidden diesel pollution defeat devices, either! Bonus.

If the VW PR office want to give a free bus to the SFcrowsnest team, we’ll definitely trial it on the grim rain-sodden streets of Tooting, as well as the rural back roads of Somerset.
