Outpost: an indie Sci-Fi short that’s more than just junkyard Chic (short scifi film in full).

So, have you ever wondered what happens when a group of sci-fi enthusiasts, who probably spent their childhoods watching Star Wars on repeat, decide to make a movie? Well, wonder no more! Enter the world of Outpost, an indie sci-fi short film that’s like a love letter to the genre, complete with a futuristic wasteland, an overconfident marauder, his robot sidekick, and, of course, an abandoned bunker.

Directed by Ben Anklam and produced by a team led by Jamie Costa (who also doubles up as both Sager and the Thief, because why play one role when you can have two?), Outpost is what happens when you take a pinch of Mad Max, a sprinkle of Fallout, and a dash of identity crisis. Steph Barkley stars as CIFF, the robot companion, proving that even in a dystopian future, you still need a sarcastic sidekick to roll its mechanical eyes at you.

The film explores the theme of “losing identity,” which, let’s be honest, is probably easy to do when you’re wandering around a wasteland looking for scraps. It’s a story that dives deep into what really defines us. Is it our collection of salvaged bunker junk or our witty banter with AI companions? Outpost attempts to answer these questions, or at least gives you something to ponder over your next can of post-apocalyptic beans.

What makes Outpost stand out, apart from its obviously high thrift-store fashion sense, is its dedication to indie filmmaking. It’s like watching a blockbuster that got shrunk in the wash – still shiny, but a little more… intimate. The crew, a passionate team of professionals who speak sci-fi as a second language, have pulled off some impressive visuals and sound design, thanks to FreshMade, Seattle, and a whole host of visual effects artists. Seriously, the credits list more VFX artists than there are inhabitants in the average dystopian settlement.

And let’s talk about the music. Composed by Andrew Gerlicher and mixed by Jordan Di Donato, the score is like that one friend who’s always dramatically on cue. It knows just when to ramp up the tension and when to let the desolate wasteland vibes simmer.

So, if you’re in the mood for a short film that packs a punch, or if you just want to see how many sci-fi tropes you can spot in under 20 minutes, give Outpost a watch. It’s a gritty, witty, and surprisingly introspective romp through the wasteland. And remember, in the world of indie sci-fi, robots are friends, not just tools for pillaging.
