Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has maintained for many years that it would be foolish to establish a human colony on Mars. The O’Neill Cylinders, which are basically enormous rotating cities in space, are the best’est option, like, ever.
The vision that Blue Origin has is superior than that of SpaceX. Is that really the case? Perhaps during the next thousand years, but certainly not right now. This is the reason why.
Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has long been interested in space exploration and has advocated for the colonization of space to ensure the long-term survival of humanity. However, unlike many other space entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs, Bezos has not focused on the idea of establishing a human colony on Mars, but has proposed the idea of building enormous rotating cities in space, known as O’Neill Cylinders.
The O’Neill Cylinder concept was proposed by physicist Gerard K. O’Neill in the 1970s to create large, habitable environments in space that would allow for a much larger population than could be supported on a planetary surface. This concept involves building enormous cylindrical structures that would be placed in space, and would rotate to create artificial gravity. We would divide the inside of the cylinder into different regions, including agricultural areas, residential areas, and industrial areas.
Bezos believes that O’Neill Cylinders are a more viable option for space colonization than a colony on Mars for several reasons. First, O’Neill Cylinders would provide a much larger living area than a colony on Mars could, which would allow for a much larger population. O’Neill Cylinders could also be built in space, rather than on a planetary surface, which would allow for much greater control over the environment, including temperature, air pressure, and lighting.
O’Neill Cylinders would have easy access to the resources of space, such as solar power, and the ability to mine asteroids for resources, allowing for a self-sustaining environment, while Mars would require extensive terraforming and infrastructure before it could sustain human life.
These O’Neill Cylinders would can avoid the hostile environment on Mars, such as the extremely thin atmosphere, the lack of magnetic field, and the harmful radiation that people would be exposed to on the surface of the planet.
It is also worth noting that the O’Neill cylinder concept is still a theoretical idea and has not yet been proven to be technically workable or economically viable, and as such, much research and development would be required before we could build such a structure.
