Disenchantment: fantasy cartoon TV series, final season (trailer).

Apparently, it all endeth soon. Disenchantment’s last season is hitting Netflix on September 1st 2023. Once upon a time, in the far-off kingdom of Netflix, Matt Groening, the creative genius behind “The Simpsons” and “Futurama,” decided to embark on a new quest. This time, he ventured into the realm of fantasy, and thus, “Disenchantment” was born.

Set in the medieval kingdom of Dreamland, “Disenchantment” is a whimsical romp through a world of magic, monsters, and mayhem. The series follows the adventures of Princess Tiabeanie Mariabeanie de la Rochambeau Grunkwitz, or “Bean” for short, a hard-drinking, rebellious royal with a knack for getting into trouble. Accompanying her on her misadventures are Elfo, an overly optimistic elf with a fondness for anchovies, and Luci, Bean’s personal demon who is often mistaken for a cat.

Now, you might be thinking, “A princess, an elf, and a demon walk into a bar… haven’t I heard this one before?” But trust me, “Disenchantment” is anything but your typical fairy tale.

For starters, our princess is more likely to be found chugging ale than sipping tea. Bean, voiced by the hilarious Abbi Jacobson, is a far cry from your typical damsel in distress. She’s a feisty, independent woman who’s just as comfortable brawling in a tavern as she is attending a royal ball. And let’s not forget her magical power that produces black lightning, a nifty party trick that’s sure to liven up any royal gathering.

Then there’s Elfo, the ever-cheerful elf who left his candy-coated homeland in search of something more. Voiced by Nat Faxon, Elfo is the perfect foil to Bean’s cynical outlook, providing a constant stream of optimism and naivety that’s as endearing as it is hilarious.

And of course, we can’t forget Luci, the mischievous demon who serves as Bean’s personal life-ruiner. Voiced by Eric André, Luci is the devil on Bean’s shoulder, always ready with a sarcastic quip or a devilish scheme. Disenchantment is a blend of fantasy and comedy, with a dash of social commentary thrown in for good measure. The series is filled with Groening’s signature humor, from its clever wordplay to its satirical take on fantasy tropes. And with a cast of characters that includes a talking pig, a three-eyed prime minister, and a queen who’s a humanoid amphibian, you never know what to expect.

But what sets “Disenchantment” apart is its willingness to take risks. The series isn’t afraid to tackle serious themes, from Bean’s struggle with alcoholism to the societal pressures she faces as a princess. And while the series has its fair share of slapstick humor, it also isn’t afraid to delve into darker territory, exploring themes of loss, betrayal, and the complexities of power.

So, if you’re in the mood for a fantasy series that’s as thought-provoking as it is hilarious, give “Disenchantment” a try. With its unique blend of humor, heart, and high fantasy, it’s sure to cast a spell on you. And with the fifth and final part set to release on September 1, 2023, there’s no better time to dive into the magical world of Dreamland.
