Damsel: Netflix fantasy film (2nd trailer).

In the cinematic realm where fairy tales are spun with a twist darker than your average bedtime story, Damsel emerges as the latest contender to flip the script. Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and penned by Dan Mazeau, this American dark fantasy film is anything but your traditional happily ever after. Slated for an exclusive Netflix release on March 8, 2024, it promises a tale that’s as fiery as the dragon at its heart.

At the center of Damsel is Princess Elodie, portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown, who finds herself in a rather prickly predicament. Imagine being a dutiful damsel, ready to tie the knot with a dashing prince, only to discover you’re the chosen repayment for an ancient royal debt. And not in the form of gold or land, but as a sacrifice to a fire-breathing dragon. Talk about a wedding crasher.

The ensemble cast is as stellar as the plot is spine-tingling. Alongside Brown’s Elodie, we have Angela Bassett as the formidable Lady Bayford, Robin Wright donning the crown as Queen Isabelle, and Ray Winstone as the King with a questionable moral compass. Nick Robinson steps into the shoes of Prince Henry, presumably the handsome yet hapless fiancé, with Brooke Carter and Shohreh Aghdashloo rounding off the cast in roles that are sure to add depth to this fantastical fiasco.

Produced by Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum, with a budget that screams “go big or go home” (we’re talking $60-70 million big), Damsel embarked on its cinematic journey in February 2022. The production unfolded in the picturesque locales of Tomar, Portugal, wrapping up in July 2022. A little bird tells us that the backdrop is as enchanting as the story itself.

As we gear up for Damsel‘s debut, one can’t help but muse on the twisted trails our heroine will navigate. Will Princess Elodie’s wit and will be enough to outsmart a dragon? Or will she find an ally in the most unlikely of places? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure – this isn’t your grandmother’s fairy tale. For those with a penchant for tales that blend darkness with a dash of daring, Damsel is poised to be a deliciously dark treat. So, mark your calendars and prepare for a journey to a land where dragons roam and damsels defy the odds. And remember, you heard about this fantastical foray here first, in the science fiction haven that is SFcrowsnest.
