Christopher Plummer, aka General Chang in ‘Star Trek The Undiscovered Country’, passes away aged 91 (news).

Christopher Plummer, aka General Chang in Star Trek The Undiscovered Country, has passed away aged 91, in his home in Weston, Connecticut, after suffering a fall.

Of course, Christopher had loads of other roles – Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music bound to be the most cited – but as a science fiction fan, he brought honour to the House of General Chang, where in space all warriors are cold warriors.

In Star Trek The Undiscovered Country, General Chang was Chancellor Gorkon’s chief of staff. He is depicted as a fan of William Shakespeare – in the ‘original’ Klingon!

The Chang makeup originally included a wig, but Christopher Plummer felt removing the wig made the character more distinct. An eye injury was disguised with a metal eyepatch, which is attached directly to his skull by bolts bearing the Klingon emblem. Time magazine rated General Chang the second best villain of the Star Trek franchise.

Other SF genre work included providing the voice of Arngeir, speaker for the Greybeards, in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim game, and in Tim Burton’s animated science fiction film 9, where he played elder leader 1.
