Life (2017) (DVD film review).
On board the International Space Station, a supposedly inert Martian life sample is examined, only to become active under the right conditions. This situation leads to the creature systematically killing the six-member crew as it grows.
The film ‘Life’ seems to be a modern rendition of the ‘Alien’ plot, minus an android or a corporation intent on bringing the creature back to Earth for research. The movie’s premise serves as a cautionary tale against bringing Martian findings back to Earth. While the special effects are commendable, the film often breaks protocol in its depiction of rescue attempts, which seems unrealistic. The handling of the Martian organism, with minimal protective measures, is also questionable. The film introduces two Martian entities, leading to self-sacrifice scenarios when Earth contact is lost.
The movie lacks scientific credibility, as no real solution is sought for the adaptable, extreme-condition-surviving creature. Containment strategies are also overlooked, raising questions about the plausibility of such a perfectly adapted alien life-form.
The DVD cover’s review comments praise the film, but one might question whether this praise is justified. ‘Life’ could be seen as a higher-budget ‘Alien’ rip-off, even if it were made in the 1970s. The film serves as a warning, but its execution and scientific grounding leave room for skepticism.
