The hyper-large solar storm of 1859 – also also known as the Carrington Event – was a monstrous solar coronal mass ejection which struck Earth’s magnetosphere wiping out early electrical power stations and telegraph systems.
If a solar storm of this magnitude hit today it could send us back temporarily to the stone age.
