Argylle: Apple+ spy-fy movie (trailer).

In the whimsically adventurous “Argylle“, coming soon to theaters and Apple TV+, we find ourselves gallivanting alongside introverted spy novelist Elly Conway (the ever-radiant Bryce Dallas Howard). A lady who, much like Kathleen Turner’s Joan Wilder in the beloved classic “Romancing the Stone”, unexpectedly finds her fiction colliding head-first with high-stakes reality. Elly, a recluse so committed that her cat Alfie might be planning an intervention, suddenly needs to navigate a world where her tales of espionage aren’t just bedtime reading.

When the dashing and possibly trustworthy (jury’s still out on that one) Aiden, played by the charismatic Sam Rockwell, swoops into Elly’s life with tales of looming kidnappings and peril, our heroine is unceremoniously thrust into a clandestine world shimmering with danger and mystery. This world, much like the perilous jungles navigated by Turner and Douglas, is brimming with characters so vivid, they could’ve danced straight out of the pages of Elly’s thrillers.

And oh, the characters! With a lineup that includes heavyweights like Henry Cavill, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, and the indomitable Samuel L. Jackson, every frame drips with the sort of action-comedy gold that made films like “Romancing the Stone” such a joy. Each actor seems to have received the memo to bring their most electric, scenery-chewing game to the set, and the screen practically crackles with their combined energy.

As our duo zigzags through exotic locales reminiscent of the vibrant landscapes that formed the backdrop of Wilder’s harrowing (and hilarious) journey, we’re treated to a symphony of action and comedy. Each set piece is carefully crafted to draw gasps of awe and bursts of laughter in equal measure, orchestrated by director Matthew Vaughn’s adept hands, who apparently used the lockdown to finely tune this rollicking adventure of a film.

For those who’ve savored every twist and laugh in “Romancing the Stone”, “Argylle” offers a delectable, spy-flavored reimagining of that delightful dance between the mundane and the extraordinary. It’s a rollicking ride that promises as much adventure and charm as the 1984 classic, but with an espionage twist that keeps you on the edge of your seat, or possibly rolling off it in laughter.

In a world where fiction and reality are indistinguishable, and danger and hilarity are two sides of the same coin, “Argylle” invites you to a spectacle that’s as heart-pounding as it is heartwarming. So, grab your popcorn, maybe a cat (preferably one less judgemental than Alfie), and buckle up for a delightful escapade where spy-fiction leaps off the page and into a chaotic, beautiful mess of life imitating art. Or is it the other way around? With “Argylle”, who can tell? And honestly, with a ride this fun, who cares?
