What If…? Season 2: more twists, turns, and Multiversal mischief? (trailer)

In a world where reality is as malleable as playdough, What If…? dares to ask the questions nobody else will. Like, what if Captain America were a woman? Or what if Tony Stark got a decent haircut? After a first season that flipped the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) on its head, Season 2 is ready to spin it like a top on a sugar rush.

Season 1, which premiered in August 2021, was Marvel Studios’ animated foray into the wild, wacky, and often weird world of the MCU multiverse. Jeffrey Wright narrated the series as the Watcher, a cosmic voyeur with a fondness for dramatic monologues and a strict “look but don’t touch” policy. The season featured nine episodes that reimagined key events from the MCU films. Remember when T’Challa became Star-Lord? Or when Doctor Strange lost his heart instead of his hands and went a tad power-mad? Good times.

Now, Season 2 is gearing up to premiere on December 22, 2023, promising to serve up a fresh batch of “what-the-heck” moments. Each of its nine episodes, releasing daily until December 30, will dive deeper into the multiverse. Because clearly, what the world needs is more alternative realities to keep track of.

The new season will continue from where Season 1 left off, with the Guardians of the Multiverse presumably disbanded after saving existence itself. But fear not, the Watcher hasn’t hung up his binoculars just yet. He’s back to peek into more bizarre universes, because apparently, he has nothing better to do.

One of the teased episodes includes What If… Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper? Because nothing says ‘fresh plot’ like rehashing old enemies, right? But wait, there’s a twist! Steve Rogers, long thought dead, might be inside the Stomper. Talk about a dramatic reunion. Another episode introduces Kahhori, a young Mohawk woman who discovers her powers after the Tesseract crash-lands in her backyard. Because if there’s anything the MCU needs, it’s more glowing cubic McGuffins causing chaos.

The series brings back a galaxy of stars reprising their MCU roles. Expect to hear Benedict Cumberbatch’s dulcet tones as Doctor Strange Supreme, Hayley Atwell as a bicep-flexing Captain Carter, and the late Chadwick Boseman in his final performance as Star-Lord T’Challa. The second season also promises new versions of characters, including one who’s an original MCU character. Because who needs the comics when you can just make stuff up?

What If…? is a reminder that in the MCU, anything can happen. Literally, anything. Want a universe where everyone is a talking animal? Probably coming in Season 3. A timeline where Thanos becomes a ballet dancer? Why not! The show’s blend of irreverent humor, twisted narratives, and stunning animation makes it a multiversal rollercoaster worth riding.

So, buckle up, Marvel fans. What If…? Season 2 is about to take us on another wild ride through the MCU’s attic, dusting off forgotten characters and throwing them into scenarios so bizarre, they just might work. Stay tuned, and remember, in the multiverse, every day is opposite day.
