We (science fiction movie trailer).

Here is a new Russian language science fiction film based on the classic novel, We, which unless you are a scholar of the field we can pretty much guarantee you have never heard of before.

You probably should have, though.

We is a sci-fi novel written by Yevgeny Zamyatin in 1920, although the original Russian text version was only then published in 1954, given its rather contentious subject matter for the Russian state.

The novel describes a world of harmony and conformity within a united totalitarian state, and set the tone for the emergence of dystopia as a sub-genre of SF.

The movie doesn’t look half bad either.

  • The Folio Society published an edition in 2018 – using the translation by Clarence Brown from 1993

Alma Books also have a (cheaper) edition using a translation by Hugh Aplin from 2009

There are two even more recent translations from 2020 listed on Wikipedia…

I think I’d quibbble with the ‘scholar’ requirement to have heard of the book! It was first published in nglish in 1924…
