Who is C. J. Cherryh?
Carolyn Janice Cherry — the surname amended and the initials imposed by a publisher who feared readers wouldn't buy space opera from a woman — taught Latin and ancient history in Oklahoma City until her thirties, then built the Alliance-Union universe: centuries of future history where station-dwellers, merchanter families and the vat-grown azi of Union live the consequences of expansion without faster-than-light mercy. Her trademark 'tight third person' traps the reader inside exhausted, deadline-crushed minds making decisions with insufficient data — never more so than in the Foreigner sequence, where one human translator stands between species who will never quite understand each other. Hugo winner, Grand Master, and famously still writing every day.
Why they matter
The field's most rigorous builder of alien minds and interstellar economics. Downbelow Station and Cyteen are pillars of modern space opera, and her psychologically claustrophobic style taught two generations how to write the alien from inside.

The Company War is ending and Pell Station is where the bill arrives: refugee ships docking with the desperate and the dying, Earth's brutal Mazianni fleet treating the station as a resource, Union's cloned legions advancing, and between them the Konstantin family trying to keep life support, law and decency running — while on the planet below, the gentle, hisa watch their human friends with incomprehending loyalty. Cherryh writes war as logistics and exhaustion: docking schedules, ration lines, loyalty under interrogation. The merchanter families' declaration of independence births the Alliance, and modern space opera grows up.

Ariane Emory — scientist, senator and serial abuser of the power both confer — runs Reseune, the laboratory-state that designs Union's azi: cloned citizens programmed by 'tape' from the womb. When she is murdered, Reseune's answer is to make another her: a clone raised in a reconstruction of Ariane's own traumas, because personality, they believe, is biography and biography can be staged. Young Ari's fight to become herself inside her predecessor's life — alongside Justin Warrick, son and clone of Ariane's rival and victim — is SF's deepest interrogation of nature, nurture and manufactured consent.

Two centuries after a lost human ship marooned its colonists on the world of the atevi — tall, black-skinned, steel-eyed beings whose fourteen words for betrayal and zero for 'love' proved hard to discover before the War of the Landing — one human, the paidhi Bren Cameron, is licensed to live among them, translating and rationing out human technology. Then someone tries to assassinate him, which is legal, filed correctly, and the first move in a power struggle that drags Bren beyond every treaty line. Cherryh keeps the reader locked in Bren's second-guessing skull: fluent, terrified and falling, unforgivably, into something the atevi have no word for.
