Awareness – Amazon Prime superhero/spy-fy film (trailer).

The silver screen beckons again, and this time it’s cooking up a transatlantic dish of thrills, illusions, and secret agencies in a flick called “Awareness.” Directed by Daniel Benmayor and featuring a star-studded Spanish-American cast, this film promises to be as enthralling as it is mind-bending. So sit back, grab some popcorn (or tapas, if you prefer), and let’s unravel what you can expect from this scintillating cinematic experience!

Illusions, Delusions, and Secret Missions

Meet Ian, played by Carlos Scholz, a rebellious teen with an odd set of skills: the ability to project illusions into people’s minds. Think X-Men’s Jean Grey but with fewer existential crises. Ian and his father are grifters, living on the societal fringes and using his illusionist talents to scam the unwary. Cue a bit of classic teenage recklessness, and Ian inadvertently flashes his powers in public, drawing the beady eye of a rather shadowy agency. It’s like messing up your school talent show but with the added joy of men in suits coming to take you away.

No Longer a One-Man Show

The plot thickens as Ian learns he’s not the only one with reality-bending gifts. There’s a whole underground of people with similar powers, which sounds like a fantastic foundation for a particularly epic game of Capture the Flag. Of course, things can’t be that simple, and Ian finds himself in the middle of a war between two secretive factions. The narrative dances around questions of identity, family, and allegiance, as Ian has to decide whose side he’s on in this impending showdown. Could make for an awkward Thanksgiving dinner, right?

The Cast and Crew

Joining Carlos Scholz on this wild ride are Pedro Alonso, María Pedraza as Esther, Lela Loren as Adriana, and Óscar Jaenada, who, judging by previous roles, is perfectly poised to play a charismatic yet potentially untrustworthy figure. After all, what’s a thriller without some tantalising enigma?

Behind the lens, Daniel Benmayor teams up with Iván Ledesma and Manuel Burque to script this cinematic labyrinth. The film is a joint venture between Federation Spain, Amazon Studios, and Dbenma Content, and has been shot in various Spanish locations, including Catalonia, Madrid, and Castile and León. And to add that extra layer of auditory delight, the film’s music is scored by Roque Baños.

The film was unveiled at the 26th Málaga Film Festival in March, part of the non-competitive ‘Málaga Premiere’ category. If you’re a member of the streaming generation, you can catch “Awareness” on Amazon Prime Video, releasing on 11 October 2023. “Illusion or reality?” That’s the question “Awareness” is poised to ask its audience. A potent mix of sci-fi, action, and thriller elements, the film offers a buffet of cinematic genres designed to captivate viewers. The stakes are as high as they could be for Ian, but we, the viewers, are the real winners here. It’s like “Inception” met “X-Men” and decided to go on a Spanish holiday.

So, prepare to question your own reality and make sure to book your (virtual) seats for this mind-twisting epic. After all, it’s not every day you get to see a teenager make the world question what’s real and what’s just smoke and mirrors!
