Starship Troopers: a classic scifi film retrospective (video).

Paul Verhoeven’s Hollywood career suffered with the failure of Showgirls, which came after the surprise and massive successes of RoboCop and Total Recall.

He returned to science fiction with Starship Troopers in an attempt to right the ship.

This film was based on the classic SF novel by Robert A. Heinlein, but Verhoeven’s interpretation of the novel’s themes led to a quite different political message in the film. However, it would be the concluding part in Paul Verhoeven’s science fiction masterpiece trilogy.

In the 23rd century, the United Citizen Federation, a military organisation created by the “veterans” after democracy and social scientists pushed civilization to the verge of collapse, rules Earth.

It is only via federal service that one may become a citizen and acquire access to benefits unavailable to non-citizens, such as voting and having children.

A race of highly advanced insectoid beings called Arachnids or, derisively, “bugs” come into conflict with humanity as they execute colonisation missions throughout the cosmos.
