Doctor Who: Night Of The Whisper (Destiny Of The Doctor 9) by Cavan Scott and Mark Wright.

‘Night Of The Whisper’ brings back the wonderful Chris Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor as we get an adventure with both Rose and Captain Jack as they visit New Vegas. What a wonderful place, a pleasure dome, literally under a dome. Its Jack’s perfect place and Rose is promised the adventure of a lifetime but, unsurprisingly, it’s not in a good way.

So Rose gets to work as a waitress in the Full Moon nightclub as the Doctor want to find out what is happening there and the wolfie owner, Sirus Wolfsbane, is the subject of the attentions of the Whisper, the vigilante who has something of a beef with the underworld of New Vegas.

As Jack plays at being a reporter on the Daily Galaxy and the Doctor is George Dixon of the Earth police force, Rose seems to get the crummy job as ever. But she has the confidence of Wolfsbane and she might just found out the truth if she plays along.

Writers Cavan Scott and Mark Wright have thrown every comicbook at this and played it for laughs in this adventure. It’s a cross between film noir, Judge Dredd with a splash of Superman, a dropping of Batman and a sly hint at the clues in ‘CSI’. There are lots of touches that made me remember the all too brief Ninth incarnation with great affection. With Nicholas Briggs playing practically every character, including a creditable Rose and a ‘fantastic’ Doctor, this is great fun and possibly the best Ninth Doctor Who never made.

To elucidate the occasionally whacky dialogue Briggs is joined by John Schwab, who voices McNeil according to the credits but I think he’s Wolfsbane as well unless Briggs was using the voice modulator. The sound including effects and music by Howard Carter is excellent and makes the whole thing sound more like a full cast production. There’s a real attention to detail and depth in ‘Night Of The Whisper’ and its shows the professional ‘big finish’ the studio achieves.
