In 1987 George Pérez rebuilt Wonder Woman from the ground up, returning her to her roots in Greek myth. Diana is a princess of the Amazons, sculpted from clay and brought to life by the gods, who is sent into the world of men as an ambassador for peace, just as Ares, the god of war, is trying to start a nuclear conflict.
This is the version that most later writers built on, and it is a strong, mythic origin story with Pérez's art at its most detailed. It treats Diana as a heroine with a mission of her own, not a female version of Superman.
