Wonder Woman

William Moulton Marston, H.G. Peter · All Star Comics #8, DC, 1941

Princess Diana leaves an island of immortal Amazons to fight for justice in "man's world", armed with bulletproof bracelets and a golden lasso that, in Marston's stories, forces anyone it binds to obey. Her creator was a psychologist who had worked on an early form of the lie detector, which is where later writers got their lasso of truth, if not everything else.

Marston's stories are strange, energetic and full of Greek myth, with an enthusiasm for tying people up that historians have since written entire books about. Whatever you make of that, he built the most enduring heroine in comics.
