Civil War: dark near future war movie about the Second U.S. Civil War (trailer).

In the dark near future, when the United States falls into a second U.S. civil war, who do you call? Apparently, a star-studded cast led by Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Cailee Spaeny, in Alex Garland’s latest cinematic brainchild, Civil War. Scheduled to hit the screens on April 26th, 2024, this film promises to be an epic war saga with a futuristic twist, and perhaps, a touch of pathos amidst the chaos.

The premise is simple yet intriguing: the United States, but not as we know it. It’s a near-future scenario, which means flying cars are passé, and instead, we have hot debates on border immigration policies. It’s a world teetering on the edge of internal conflict, making it the perfect setting for a story that blends sci-fi with the gritty realities of war.

Kirsten Dunst, presumably, plays a character who’s as baffled by the future as we are, but with way cooler gadgets. Wagner Moura might be seen negotiating peace with a dove-like war drone, while Stephen McKinley Henderson likely offers sage advice, possibly to a group of soldiers questioning their orders. And Cailee Spaeny? She’s probably mastering the art of urban warfare while questioning the existential dilemmas of being a Gen-Z in a fractured world.

Alex Garland, the mastermind behind this creation, describes the film as a sci-fi allegory, a companion piece to Men. It’s “set at an indeterminate point in the future – just far enough ahead for me to add a conceit,” Garland stated in an interview. This means we can expect killer drone swarms or perhaps a Pentagon-branded ChatGPT 9 with an attitude problem – the sky’s the limit. Joining the ensemble are Karl Glusman and Sonoya Mizuno, along with Jonica T. Gibbs, Jess Matney, Jesse Plemons, and Nick Offerman, ensuring that this film isn’t just a war story, but a war story with flair. Picture Nick Offerman as a grizzled future-veteran, dispensing wisdom and woodworking tips in equal measure. Filming kicked off in Atlanta, a city known for peaches and now, apparently, dystopian futures. The production then moved to London, which means we might get a glimpse of a future Big Ben with melted clock hands.

In essence, Civil War is shaping up to be more than just a film; it’s a glimpse into a future that’s weird, a bit worrying, and undeniably horrific. It’s where high-tech meets high stakes, and where the future of the United States hangs in the balance, probably decided by a group of characters who are just as confused about the future as we are.
