Blueberry

Jean-Michel Charlier, Jean Giraud (Moebius) · Pilote, 1963 onwards

Lieutenant Mike Blueberry is a disgraced, hard-drinking cavalry officer in the American West after the Civil War, a man who is never trusted by his superiors and who ends up on the wrong side of the law more often than the right. Giraud modelled his face on the actor Jean-Paul Belmondo, and the stories take in Apache wars, railway barons, lost gold and a great deal of betrayal.

This is the other career of Moebius, the one he signed as Gir, and for many readers it is his finest work: a realistic, sprawling western epic that grew darker and more complex over the years. It is the greatest European western, and one of the greatest westerns in any medium. A 2004 film took it in a strange, psychedelic direction.
