Iznogoud is the grand vizier of Baghdad, and he wants to be caliph instead of the caliph. He says so, a lot. Every story is about his latest attempt to depose the good-natured Caliph Haroun Al Plassid, with the help of his long-suffering henchman, and every attempt ends in disaster, usually for Iznogoud.
Goscinny's puns are relentless, Tabary's art is loose and funny, and the name has entered the French language as a word for a scheming, ambitious underling. The English translations are, again, by Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge, and they are brilliant. It is a cartoon about politics that never goes out of date, for obvious reasons.
