Batwoman… she can be gay, just not happy, says DC.
The latest brouhaha from the world of comic-books is the resignation of the co-creators of the Kate Kane story-line for DC’s Batwoman, with creators J.H. Williams and W. Haden Blackman posting on their blog that DC had ordered them to scupper the wedding of ex-soldier Kate Kane (aka Batwoman) to her female partner, lawyer Maggie Sawyer, the straw that broke the camel’s back amidst a chain of storyline interference.
“Most crushingly (we were then) prohibited from ever showing Kate and Maggie actually getting married,’ they wrote.
Large sections of the UK press picked up on a DC statement refuting charges of homophobia, with Dan DiDio, a DC co-publisher, being reported as explaining that while they are happy to feature gay superheroes in their comics, having happy gay superheroes is not part of their plans. He is reported as saying, “Heroes shouldn’t have happy personal lives. They are committed to being that person and defending others at the sacrifice of their own personal interests.”
Not sure about that one. It must take quite a lot to make two well-known comic creators resign in this public a manner. Can anyone here name all the straight wedded superhero couples where one of the partners then went on to die tragically and/or nobly? Cyclops and Phoenix got hitched at one point didn’t they? Richards and the Invisible Girl from Fantastic Four are a long-standing offsy/onsy married couple?
This one, will, we suspect, play and play.
