Astrophysicists have just uncovered what may be a second candidate for an interstellar meteorite… or ‘something’ else (science video).

The second possibility for an interstellar meteor just uncovered by Avi Loeb and Amir Siraj is much stranger than the first. In 2014, a space rock crashed on Earth. Oumuamua was the first verified extrasolar object. However, secret information showing that another interstellar object crashed on Earth was released by the United States Space Command.

The pair of researchers from Harvard University have presented evidence of a second object, called Interstellar Meteor 2 (IM2), that may have originated beyond the solar system before it burned up in Earth’s atmosphere and potentially fell to the surface, according to a study.

Amir Siraj, a student in astrophysics at Harvard, and astronomer Avi Loeb, who serves as Harvard’s Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science, suggest that a meteor that burst into a fireball off the coast of Portugal on March 9, 2017, is an “additional interstellar object candidate.”

The objects appear to be extremely robust, ranking as the first- and third-highest meteors in material strength in a NASA catalog that has collected data on hundreds of fireballs. The researchers suggest that the meteors may be a kind of interstellar shrapnel produced by the explosions of large stars, called supernovae, or they may be alien artifacts.
