Apple’s “cheap” iPhone 5c – a snap at just… £549?

Apple has pulled the curtain off their new iPhone 5s, including an eight megapixel iSight camera – it ships with iOS 7 and is engineered for 64-bit technology with features that include their Control Center, Notification Center, Multitasking, AirDrop, Photos, Safari, Siri and iTunes Radio. The new A7 chip in the iPhone 5s is the beast that aims to bring a 64-bit desktop-class architecture to Apple’s user base. It’s available in three metallic finishes including gold, silver and Space Grey.

The phone also come with the phone Touch ID system, a way to unlock an iPhone with the touch of a finger. Built into the home button, Touch ID uses a laser cut sapphire crystal, together with the capacitive touch sensor, to take a high-resolution image of a fingerprint and analyze it to provide phone access. Touch ID can also be used as a secure way to approve purchases from the iTunes Store, App Store or iBooks Store.

“iPhone 5s is the most forward-thinking smartphone in the world, delivering desktop class architecture in the palm of your hand,” trilled Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone 5s sets a new standard for smartphones, packed into its beautiful and refined design are breakthrough features that really matter to people, like Touch ID, a simple and secure way to unlock your phone with just a touch of your finger.”

But with the low-end model costing £549 in the UK, I think their devs need to do a little more work on Apple’s definition of “cheap”.

  • I must admit I had to make a double take when I saw the price. I looked at the apple website and it was $99, so I thought ooh… maybe £79 on the UK site, clicked on the UK and WOOOOOOWWWWWWWWW!!!

Now I realise that is unlocked SIM free and the American is $99 PLUS a contract, BUT…

I did think 5C was for 5Cheaper, but of course, its 5Colour!

  • Am I the only one in the world who hasn’t got a use for a mobile phone other than as a door wedge??

  • When you consider on amazon it is possible to buy a Chinese copy of a galaxy note for £100 apple seems to have wedged themselves further up their own arses. It doesn’t matter though – they will still sell in their squillions.
