What it is

Call of Cthulhu is less about heroic power and more about ordinary investigators following clues they may later wish they had ignored. Characters are competent but vulnerable, and the fun often comes from piecing together a mystery while the situation becomes more alarming. Combat is possible, but research, caution, interviews, libraries, maps, letters and horrible realisations are often more important than winning a fight.

Who it suits

  • Groups that enjoy mystery, horror and period atmosphere.
  • Players who do not need every problem solved by combat.
  • Game masters who like clues, handouts and revelations.
  • One-shot nights where a complete story matters more than levelling up.

How to start

  • Run a short published scenario or quickstart mystery.
  • Explain tone and content boundaries before play.
  • Tell players that retreat, research and caution are valid choices.
  • Use safety tools for horror content.

What to watch for

The horror tone needs consent and calibration. Avoid surprising players with material they did not sign up for.
