Promethea

Alan Moore, J.H. Williams III · America's Best Comics, 1999–2005

Sophie Bangs is a college student writing a paper on a mythical warrior woman called Promethea, when she finds out that Promethea is real, and she is about to become her. What starts as a superhero comic turns, gradually and then decisively, into a guided tour of magic, the imagination and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, with Moore laying out his own beliefs at length.

It can be heavy going, and some readers find the lectures too much. But J.H. Williams III's art is breathtaking, with every issue using a new layout, some shaped like Möbius strips, some like tarot cards, some that you almost have to turn upside down, and it is one of the most ambitious comics ever drawn.
