Girls' comics

Tammy

Various · IPC, 1971–1984

Tammy was IPC's answer to Bunty, and it was darker, more melodramatic and more willing to put its heroines through hell. Its stories were full of cruel guardians, persecuted orphans, abusive coaches and girls who had to fight against impossible odds, like Bella Barlow, an orphaned gymnast who practised on makeshift apparatus in her uncle's back yard.

The strips were written by some of the best writers in British comics, and they have a raw emotional power that still works. Rebellion has been reprinting the best of them.
