Jinty was the girls' comic most given to science fiction, with stories about environmental disasters, dystopian futures, alien worlds and strange technologies, alongside the usual school and sport stories. Fran of the Floods, in which the rain doesn't stop and a girl tries to find her family in a drowning Britain, is a genuine climate-fiction classic, decades before the term existed.
The stories were written by some of the best writers of the time, including Pat Mills, and they are remarkably inventive. Rebellion's reprints have brought them to a new audience, and they deserve it.
