Basin City is a town full of corrupt cops, psychotic killers, prostitutes and a few tough, doomed men who try to do the right thing. Frank Miller's crime stories are drawn in stark black and white, with occasional splashes of colour, and they are violent, stylised and relentless.
The Hard Goodbye, in which a hulking thug called Marv sets out to avenge a woman who was kind to him, is the best place to start. Robert Rodriguez and Miller co-directed a faithful film version in 2005.
