100 Bullets

Brian Azzarello, Eduardo Risso · Vertigo, 1999–2009

A mysterious man called Agent Graves approaches people who have been wronged and gives them a briefcase containing a gun, a hundred untraceable bullets and proof of who ruined their lives. What they do next is up to them. Slowly, the stories reveal a vast conspiracy that goes back to the founding of America.

It ran for exactly a hundred issues, and it is one of the most acclaimed crime comics ever, with Azzarello's hard-boiled dialogue and Risso's shadowy, stylish art. The conspiracy gets complicated, but the individual stories are superb.
