Superheroes

DC: The New Frontier

Darwyn Cooke · DC, 2004

Between 1945 and 1960, America's costumed heroes are out of fashion, hounded by McCarthyism and distrusted by the government. A new generation of heroes, including a test pilot called Hal Jordan and a Martian stranded on Earth, is waiting to emerge, just as a mysterious threat appears that will need everyone.

Cooke's art, clean and stylish, like a 1950s advertisement, makes it one of the most beautiful superhero comics ever, and his story is a love letter to the optimism of the space age that does not ignore the racism and paranoia of the period. It was adapted as an animated film in 2008.
