Jean Grey has become Phoenix, a being of almost unlimited cosmic power, and power corrupts. When she destroys a star, killing billions of people, an alien empire decides she must die, and the X-Men must decide whether to fight for her, even though they know what she has become.
This is the story that made the X-Men the most popular comic in America, with Claremont's soap-opera plotting at its most dramatic and John Byrne's art at its best. It has been filmed twice, neither time as well as it was told here. It is a proper tragedy, which is rarer in superhero comics than you might expect.
