Thorgal

Jean Van Hamme, Grzegorz Rosiński · Tintin magazine, 1977 onwards

Thorgal was found as a baby by Vikings and raised as one of them, which is a perfectly good start for a sword-and-sorcery saga before it turns out that he is the descendant of a star-faring race who came to Earth long ago. So Thorgal is both a Viking story and a science fiction story, and it never quite settles for one or the other, which is part of its charm.

Van Hamme, a Belgian writer who also created XIII and Largo Winch, knew how to keep a long story moving, and Rosiński's art, which eventually became fully painted, gets better with every album. There are more than forty volumes now, with later books by other hands, but the first run is one of the great European adventure series.
