The Vision

Tom King, Gabriel Hernández Walta · Marvel, 2015–16

The Vision, the android Avenger, wants to be normal. So he builds a family (a wife and two teenage children, all synthetic) and moves to the suburbs of Washington, D.C. The neighbours are suspicious, the children struggle at school and, as the narrator warns us from the start, this is not going to end well.

This is a suburban tragedy with a science fiction heart, like Ira Levin writing an Avengers comic, and it asks what it means for a machine to want to be human. Walta's quiet, precise art and Jordie Bellaire's colours make it look like a family photograph album with something wrong in every picture. Readers of the SFcrowsnest AI glossary will find it rich in ideas.
