The Manhattan Project was not just about the atomic bomb. It was a cover for all sorts of mad science, led by an Oppenheimer who has been replaced by his cannibal twin brother, alongside an Einstein who is not quite himself, a Wernher von Braun with a robot arm and an Enrico Fermi who is not, strictly speaking, human.
Hickman's alternate history is gleefully insane, packed with alien invasions, AI presidents and secret space programmes, and Pitarra's gnarly, detailed art makes the grotesque look fun. It is not a history lesson, but it is a very entertaining argument about what science does when nobody is watching it.
