The Bluecoats
Raoul Cauvin, with Louis Salvérius then Willy Lambil · Spirou, 1968 onwards
Sergeant Chesterfield is a patriotic, stupid and very brave soldier in the Union cavalry during the American Civil War. Corporal Blutch is a cynic and a coward who would rather be anywhere but the front, and spends most of his time trying to desert. They cannot stand each other, and they are the best of friends.
The Bluecoats is a comedy, but it is a comedy about war, and it has a sharp anti-war streak that becomes clearer as the series goes on. Cauvin wrote it for over forty years, and it has been one of the most popular series in Belgium for most of that time. The history is surprisingly well researched, too.
