A man leaves his wife and daughter to find work in a new country, and arrives in a strange, fantastical city, where he has to learn everything from scratch: the language, the food, the customs and the strange creatures that people keep as pets. The book has no words at all, and it doesn't need them.
Shaun Tan's sepia-toned pencil art is extraordinary, like old photographs of a world that never existed, and the book is a moving, universal story about immigration and belonging. It won major awards, including the prize for best album at Angoulême.
