Star Hawks

Ron Goulart, Gil Kane · newspaper strip, 1977–1981

Two interplanetary police officers and their robot dog chase smugglers, killers and assorted villains across the galaxy. It launched in the same year as Star Wars and was designed to catch the same wave.

What made it special was the format: Gil Kane was given a double-height daily strip, twice the usual space, and filled it with dynamic space action. Newspapers soon cut it back to normal size, as newspapers do, but the early strips remain a lost treasure of SF art.
