Preacher

Garth Ennis, Steve Dillon · Vertigo, 1995–2000

Jesse Custer is a small-town Texas preacher who is possessed by Genesis, the child of an angel and a demon, which gives him the power to make anyone do anything he says. He learns that God has abandoned heaven, and he sets off across America to find him and make him answer for it, accompanied by his ex-girlfriend Tulip and an Irish vampire called Cassidy who is the best and worst friend anyone ever had.

Preacher is violent, blasphemous, crude and very funny, and underneath all that it is a surprisingly sincere Western about loyalty, friendship and what it means to be a decent man. Steve Dillon's plain, expressive art stops it from tipping over into chaos, and makes the grotesque characters, notably a young man called Arseface, somehow affecting. It was adapted for television between 2016 and 2019.
