Marjane Satrapi grew up in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution and the war with Iraq, and Persepolis is the story of her childhood, her teenage years in Vienna and her return to Iran as a young woman. It is funny, angry and moving, drawn in a simple black-and-white style that makes the most terrible events clear.
It has been translated into dozens of languages, and Satrapi co-directed an animated film of it in 2007, which was nominated for an Oscar. It is one of the best introductions to graphic memoir.
