In a medieval world of mice, the Mouse Guard protects the paths between settlements from snakes, weasels, weather and any other threat to a very small society. It is a simple premise, played completely straight, and it works beautifully.
Petersen's art is the reason to read it: detailed, warm and lovingly designed, with every mouse settlement, tool and weapon drawn as though it would really work. The square format makes the books look like illustrated storybooks. It is suitable for all ages, and it inspired an award-winning roleplaying game (see the SFcrowsnest tabletop guide).
