In the near future, the world has been carved up among a handful of wealthy Families. Everyone else is either a serf, who works for them, or waste, who doesn't. Each Family has a Lazarus, a genetically enhanced protector, and Forever Carlyle is the Carlyle family's Lazarus, trained to kill and loyal to her family, until she starts to learn some things about them.
Rucka's plotting is meticulous, and the world is built with the care of a political thriller, which is what Lazarus is. Lark's gritty, realistic art stops it from ever looking like a superhero comic. It is a warning about wealth, power and inequality, and the warning keeps getting louder.
