Garfield is a fat, lazy orange cat who loves lasagne and hates Mondays, and he lives with the long-suffering Jon Arbuckle and a dim but cheerful dog called Odie. That is almost the entire premise, and it has been enough to make Garfield the world's most widely syndicated comic strip.
It is easy to be snooty about Garfield, and plenty of people are, but the early strips are funnier than you might remember, and the character's contempt for the world is strangely relatable. There is also Garfield Minus Garfield, an online project that removes the cat, leaving Jon talking to himself, which turns it into an existential masterpiece.
