Hans von Hammer is a German fighter pilot in the First World War, the "Hammer of Hell", and he is also the hero of this story. He is a lonely man, who kills because it is his duty and mourns every man he shoots down, and his only companion is a wolf he meets in the Black Forest.
It was remarkable for an American comic of the 1960s to tell the war from a German point of view, and Kanigher and Kubert made it a meditation on the cost of war. Kubert's aerial combat scenes are superb, and the book is a classic.
