Commando is a pocket-sized comic book, sixty-odd pages long, that tells a complete war story in every issue, and it has been doing so since 1961. It has published more than 5,000 issues, making it one of the longest-running comics in the world, and it is still going strong.
The stories are mostly set in the Second World War, and they are full of heroic British soldiers, dastardly enemies and phrases that have entered the language ("Achtung!", "Gott in Himmel!" and the famous death cry "Aaaarrgh!"). They are simple, direct and enormously enjoyable, and the painted covers are often superb.
